We all tend to forget about ourselves, don’t we?
Life can be stressful and busy.. really really busy!
The past few months have been really hectic for me. Working at school, helping my sister after she gave birth, fasting the beautiful month Ramadan, celebrating the holiday with family, and teaching extra courses on weekends to make extra money have really consumed all my time. They were productive and happy events definitely, but still, I didn’t have time for myself.
Thus, now that we are starting the summer vacation, I decided to make it the summer of self-care hoping it’ll help me establish new habits.
Self- care is all about social media nowadays. Everyone talks about how important and how life-changing it is. If you just search the hashtags related to self-care you’d be surprised at the number of posts, pictures, quotes, and articles written about it. So, this leaves us with the question:
What exactly is self- care?
Psychology today defines self-care as paying attention to you. Psychcentral says that it is any activity that we do intentionally to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Dictionary likewise says that it is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.
I think that self- care is taking care of your whole wellbeing (mentally, physically, emotionally), being your own friend ( practicing self- compassion) and doing things that YOU need to do to make you feel more comfortable, happier and refreshed.
That’s why I think self- care is personal and different to everyone because not everyone’s life is the same. You know what suits you best and what activities or actions that could make tremendous changes to your overall mood.
Moreover, I think that self-care is about working on the inside that’ll lead to long-lasting benefits and feeling better in general.
What do I mean by that ?
So many people and companies are trying to promote self- care as having a very expensive facial, spending a day at a luxurious spa somewhere, or getting certain products to use in your “Me Time”.
These things could be great, and they are indeed, but they only work for a short period of time. Moreover, Most of us cannot afford these things on a daily or even a weekly basis!
Self- care does not have to be expensive!
On the contrary, it is very simple and it lies in your everyday habits!
That being said, here are the things that I decided to do to practice self- care this summer
1. Read more!
I love reading. It is one of my favorite hobbies of all time! Reading expands your horizon, allows you to understand yourself and others better and improves one’s writing. When I read I feel like I’m growing somehow! A feeling I don’t get when practicing other hobbies!
I also have my own ritual regarding reading and starting vacations. Buying new books to add to my library is a must before starting any vacation. Sometimes I buy one book, other times I buy plenty! Seeing them on my desk gets me excited to start reading!
Thus, this summer I’m planning to read more and maybe do a reading challenge (read two hours every day) and see what happens (of course I’ll post a blog about it!).
2. Get back on exercising!
It’s been almost 8 months since I stopped exercising and it did not do good to my body. I felt sluggish and out of energy most of the time. Thus, I think now is the time to start working out. In order to encourage myself, I joined an aerobics class with the sweetest trainer. I used to work out at home watching YouTube videos and DVDs. Joining a group however makes it more fun and challenging!
3. Meditating and watching sunsets at the sea!
10 minutes of stillness and quiet can restore your world. So what about having them while watching sunsets at the sea? Sunsets are one of the most beautiful natural views God has ever created. Watching them fills you with tranquility and serenity. There is something so memorizing watching the colors change and the sun disappearing in the sky. Moreover, the sea seems the perfect place in summer considering how hot it can be outside.
4. Enjoying my mornings!
Spending mornings the right way can set your mood for your whole day. I’m planning to enjoy my morning hours and my morning coffee. I have a secret hobby of loving having coffee in different coffeehouses and coffee shops! I’ll treat myself and do more of that!
5. Taking care of my skin and hair.. naturally!
Both my skin and my hair have become dry lately. So, I’m planning to try out some simple home remedies and see what works!
6. Spend more quality time with friends and family!
Having meaningful conversations with friends can enrich your soul and spending time with them brings happiness and joy. Now that I have more time in my hands, I’m planning to reconnect people whom I haven’t spoken with in a while and do some activities together to make this summer more memorable.
7. Get enough sleep!
I know I am not the only one who does not get enough sleep! It’s easy for us to just ignore sleeping and resting in order to finish our to-do lists and daily tasks. After listening to this amazing Ted Talk about sleep, I’m more inclined to improve my sleeping hours!
These are the things that I’m planning to do to practice self- care this summer. As I said before, self- care is not about breaking your bank account but doing simple things that will enhance your wellbeing and increase your happiness.
